South of Whitby, the coastal path drops down onto Saltwick Bay, where a dark rocky headland juts out into the North Sea. At low tide, the beach reveals Jurassic rock pools and the occasional ammonite freshly loosed from the crumbling cliff. This print was made from sketches and photographs taken on the multi-day walk from Redcar to Bridlington. Standing on the cliff edge above the Nab, watching the tide draw back over a bay that has known everything from Jurassic ichthyosaurs to seventeenth-century alum workers to shipwrecks, is the reason I keep coming back to this coastal path again and again.
A single-colour hand-carved linocut from the ongoing Yorkshire coastal path series.
